Slow and Steady Build to A Million with Gretchen Grove

Serial entrepreneur, chocolatier and artist – Gretchen Grove

Gretchen Grove_204Gretchen has been a listener to the show for a long while and has over a million net worth. She has had a few amazing businesses (like creating the first ever Chocolate Sushi Candy!) and a gallery in Hawaii. One thing that separates her though is that her businesses weren’t these crazy growth stories. She was able to slowly build her network by saving a lot and making smart investing decisions. I was so excited to highlight her story! We don’t all need to become millionaires overnight! Gretchen gives us some amazing tactics for slowly growing your net worth to a million!

Thanks so much for listening!

  • Great interview! I am struggling with my bookkeeping. I would like to go over my tools and system that I have in place to make sure I am doing everything correctly. My wife and I own a caregiving agency. Have a good day!

  • Hi! Love it when you have guests that started small and sell products! That’s where I’m at, I should of already launched my cosmetic and skincare business, labels are designed and website almost launched, my inner circle beg for my products but I never have that big batch ready for everyone, I think I have a fear of the “big batch” I am healing my epilepsy and cook all day for my sensitive family, if im tired ill tell myself there’s no way I can formulate today, when I’m energized I’ll bake special treats or dinners! Where do i find the time? As a family were looking to buy land and go into permaculture, but that’s more my husbands passion, I want those fruit trees and chickens but I really want my products finished and selling, that’s my baby…..but I really need to organize that cabinet…….. And man that grout is dirty

  • A little different interview then most – I enjoyed her insight and appreciated the steadiness and staying in the long haul. We have seven children and they make supper four times a week in teams -glad to hear we’re not the only ones. Thank you!

  • Hi Jamie and Gretchen,

Thank you for the great interview. Even though I am not in business but doing stuffs online.
Amazed how Gretchen done it slow and steady without giving up. Love the way she saved 50k for house mortgage
I just what to know, she said about going into supply and not starting a business like her candyshop … What supply?.
    Thank you Jamie and Gretchen

    • Hi Jamie- what I talked about was teaching candymaking classes and selling the supplies required to make the candy. Hope that clarifies it for you.
      Gretchen

  • Great interview. I closed my transportation company to purchase rentals. Strugling to get a new client base for my blog landladypreneur.com My idea is to answer tenant questions for a fee. Right now, I answer for free.

    • Sarabella- I would recommend that you keep track of the questions that people ask you, eventually compile them and sell them as a PDF or small e-book.
      Good luck to you,

  • Hello Jamie,
I love your business concept and business model. I have watched all of your videos. They are very informative, enjoyable and inspiring. My company is fairly new. I have a unique product that I am trying to sell online. My problem is getting recognized online. I have tried canvassing locally, Etsy, Facebook and I have even considered making YouTube videos but there is only so much you can do with handle covers.

Like Gretchen, I have an artistic background and I have a strong interest in business. I want to take my business to the next level and I would like to be considered for an opportunity to speak with Gretchen Grove.

Thanks Jamie! I?m looking forward to being interviewed by you in the future!

  • Loved this interview and the idea of slow, steady growth! I’ve got the frugal thing down, but don’t have enough money coming in! I’m both a writer and a massage therapist. I’m looking to get both things off the ground, but am totally lost with the technical side. I don’t understand online systems or marketing at all! I’m overwhelmed with the information I hear and not sure where to begin.

    Thanks!
    Lisa

    • Hey Lisa R.

Do you have a website? Or LinkedIn profile? Those might be a good start.

  • I’m just developing a business plan and struggling with the “where to start” question.

  • Hi,
I am enthralled by how Gretchen juggled raising a family, ran a business, saved and still managed to help others.
I’m struggling at the first hurdle and aspire to emulate Gretchen’s success.
My business model is based on supporting women while they start their own business. However, I need to balance paying the bills and saving until the business takes off. Absolutely desperate for a mentor.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Jamie and Gretchen,

I own a small software development business, been in the business for quite some time, still working as full time employee for somebody else; my software development company is a side business.

I would like it to stop being small (this is a one person company) but I am struggling with the following.

    1. I often have very good ideas but I struggle with the execution process, what would you suggest to become more effective in the execution process?

    2. I usually target small businesses but I have come to the realization that small businesses equals small sales / profits, how can I successfully approach big businesses.

    3. One of the reasons I believe I haven’t grow is because it is only myself working on this business, I would like to get help but I refused the idea of having permanent employees or even par-time employees, any ideas about getting help with out having the payroll pain?

    Thanks,

    Jerry

  • Hi Gretchen and Jamie! I enjoyed this interview greatly. I am starting out with my art business. I am a papercutting artist and I sell custom pet portraits and original botanical and nature inspired art. There are so many aspects to starting a business I would love Gretchen’s wisdom regarding maintaining books and managing my limited time-I am also a mom + freelance copy editor for scientists- let’s just say I am a busy woman! Thanks again for all the effort Jaime and for bringing Gretchen’s story to us.

    • Julia – papercutting sounds like fun. I’m following up with each person who submitted a question for me through Eventual Millionaire even though you didn’t win the phone call. • Hi Jaime from Theo at Auckland New Zealand

A question for Gretchen, on Business.

I am a distributor for Nuskin, and for a long time have not likes the way my upline team went about finding people to sign up with our Business.

Our Company has very innovative products at competitive pricing and wholesale
i have struggled to find people interested in both the business and products
as i refused to hassle any one, into joining, but prefered to just shoot straight and ask their interest in either one or the other or both, depending on their type of character.

I am not a seller, but do enjoy the products and the business model we have been provided by a wonderful company, who has been arwarded thebest business award for the last few years in the USA.

I am a bit of an entrepreneur and never do as am told but prefer to do business my own way, and not pressure people, may be thats my style

any was we persevere and carry one eventually i will succeed my way.

    Have a Tremendous day

    Regards Theo

    • Theo- I get it, I don’t like to “sell” either and certainly would never pressure anyone. But selling is really just about being enthusiastic about a product and sharing that enthusiasm with others. If they feel that it’s right for them, you’ve done them a great favor.
      Gretchen

  • this was such a great interview. I am glad to now be apart of something so great. I am struggling with classifying what service I offer so I can better brand myself and make income to support the life style I want for my family.

  • I’ve always thought that slow and steady was a better way to manifest the millionaire dream. It just seemed so much more attainable to me.

  • I’m in the middle of starting to a new business that is completely different than the current one and I love Gretchen’s story, because it is real tangible down-to-earth steady-paced story of building a profitable business and I really Admire that . . .

My current challenges are finding right people with technical skills for creating/modifying my online based business and also actually launching it(going for it) etc . .

And also when I’m feeling down, listening to your case studies/videos have been very encouraging, so THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH, Jaime !
Perhaps one day we’ll work together ~

Big Huge Cheers, Sunghee from Vancouver, BC ^_^

    • Sunghee- you need to launch sooner rather than later. You need to hear what your customers want and the only way you’ll do that is if you’re up and running. Don’t worry about it being perfect. You can make it better as you move forward.

Finding the right people to work for you is always challenging. Maybe consider part-time virtual assistants to start with. If you like working with them, you can offer the a full-time position.
      Best of luck to you,
      Gretchen Grove

  • I’m starting a new business and it’s compeletely different than the current business that I’m trying to close.

The challenges that I have now are finding right people with technical skills to change/modify my new online ecommerce business.

Gretchen’s story is about building a real tangible steady growning business and it’s really inspiring !

And Thank You So Much for all your case studies/videos, Jaime !
They are truly encouring & motivational especially for me to move forward.

Much Thanks & Blessings, Sunghee from Vancouver, BC, Canada

  • I’ve been in business for six years and still struggle with getting a handle on cash flow planning.

  • Hey Gretchen and Jaime!

Great Show as usual! My biggest struggle right now is finding a great place to host my coaching site that would expand with me.

I have content that I want to publish via a blog and I want to create a podcast for independent restaurant owners that will show them how systems can grow the business and profit all while enjoying a great quality of life. I also want to interview other successful restaurateurs and have them share best practices and what life is like for them.

I have done this successfully and is my specialty. I just want to help more people by creating this platform.

    Please help!
