  • What key components Michael used to grow from 1,000 subscribers to 20,000 in one year (Part time!)
  • Steps he took to monetized his blog at first
  • What he would do if he started today
  • Why Michael called himself “Such a Rookie!” even now

Michael is an amazing man. His newest book is called Platform and he discusses how he built his audience to over 240,000 people.

It wasn’t easy and for the first few years he only had a very small number of subscribers. He talks about what he did to grow his platform, and also answers my questions about becoming an author.

He has a great blog and podcast and knows so much about the publishing industry! (He was the CEO of a large publishing company for many years)

  • It is amazing the following Michael has. Platform was easily the most practical book I’ve read all year. Keep a pen and notebook handy. Thanks for the interview.

    • Awesome! I’ve recommended it a few times already too. Though in the interview, it’s easy to see why people love Michael. He actually cares about all of his followers as people, not just numbers! 🙂

  • thx for this interview! it’s always a pleasure to watch and listen to you and your guests, jaime!
just listened to some of michaels podcasts which are very inspiring and keep me going, focusing on the long turn…

    • Michael’s podcasts truly are great. You know he’s always trying to give just the best content, so it’s worth your time!

  • Great interview thanks Jamie again. I liked the point Michael made about the disconnect between what he felt was great work, vs. what his audience thinks is great. Its easy to feel great about something you create and yet not really make an impact with it. And on the other hand, you might feel totally discouraged and lousy about something and yet people will find it most valuable. You just never know for sure exactly how your your material will be received or perceived. So in essence, what I learned from the interview is just get your content out there, and not worry so much about how you feel about it.

    • Yes! That bit helped me too 😉

  • Hi Jaime, I am so happy I found you!! I love your site and your substantive information and how you always seem to ask the questions I am wondering about. Also, FANTASTIC guests. Hyatt was one of my favs. Not sure if this is where I post to get a freeee course BUT the one thing I am going to do this year is to put my goals on my fridge where I see them every day and where anyone who comes over sees them including my family and friends. It will keep reminding me of what I am going for this year and it will make me accountable. THANK YOU!! You are awesome. And good luck with your book. NYT bestseller list: here you come!! xxxxooo, Suzanne.

  • Hi Jaime,
I enjoyed the interview with Michael, thank you for bringing it to us.
I appreciate the notes on goal setting and how to manage your goals.
The one thing that would make my 2014 great would be to start to seriously monetize my blogs and start selling more books. I know, it seems a bit much but I look at this as 4 separate goals and I am working towards them equally. I think my plan may work but if not, then lesson learned.
Thank you again for all of your inspiration.
    Wade

  • My best year yet can happen by choosing to take squeamish uncomfortable action on goals I have literally set to shiver needles down my back and force me to prepare for.

  • My best year will involve transitioning from my current career to personal training. I need to start to see if I enjoy it and if I can make enough to support my family doing it.

  • I know that 2014 is going to be my best year ever for two reason. First, because I am staying the course and not giving up. Second, as Michael talked about I have been working on my narrative the past could months and have cleared some big things!

Love this episode, it is refreshing to hear other talk about the seasons of life, I believe it is a topic that is skipped way too often and has a big impact on our success! Thank you for the great show!

  • 2014 will be the best year ever for me because of God’s blessing in my life. He is allowing me to face challenges right now to direct my paths in the direction that gives Him the most glory as He answers my prayers and desires for more of Him.

Thanks for the interview, Jaime. Thanks, Michael.

  • Great interview. It sat on my playlist for a week because I’d already heard Michael talk about his course, so I love that your interview delved into other questions, especially about his past failures.

2014 is going to be the best year ever for me because I’m helping my wife launch her book for http://www.ifonlytheytoldme.com and I’m going to help people design and build truly ‘good’ homes through HomeStyleGreen.com.

  • I know this 2014 will be the turning point for me, and now I am printing my Huge mind map into the huge paper, to make visible my huge target.
I am looking for a staff or partner that can help me in business, and before I am start renovating office on November last year, hope with the new office can bring the new spirit everyday in 2014. Great Interview, and Thanks.

  • Thank-you Jaime for the motivation you bring to all of us striving to become Millionaires – or at least satisfied with where we are.

Here is my story – I will try to keep it short:

We moved to Texas about 5 1/2 years ago. My wife who is from New York has tried very hard to enjoy life here. But sadly, she is not content. We have been married for almost 26 years and are ready to settle down in a place agreeable to our family – including our two teens.

We have had a very exciting and adventurous life with no complaints. Some of the things I have done: served in two branches of the military, worked in the IT field, been an International Equity Trader, Missionary/Teacher in China, and now a Cop. It is time to find something to carry us into retirement, etc.

This year has to be the year to make that happen: We are buying a house in another state and need to create income to sustain our life.

I am developing an online course and several other online projects to do this.

I am sure Michael’s Course could help me immensely to achieve this dream!

    Keep up the great work!

    John

    • sorry to hear that. I moved to Texas from North Carolina almost 3 years ago, it was a big transition. I just got very invested, joined a church, meetup groups, fitness groups, and took cooking classes. Groupon is great for this giving you access to groups and classes at discount rates. Wherever you move you will need to connect in that city as well. Good Luck on building your business and community where you are headed.
