Millionaire Series Part 2 – Become Debt Free Rule #1

Get Debt Free – Rule #1

The number one rule to becoming debt free:

BE HONEST.

Being honest doesn’t just mean don’t lie.

Being honest means admitting those things that you don’t want to admit, uncovering things that don’t want to be uncovered, and remembering things you don’t want to remember.

Listen to Your Inner Critic

Listen to what the voice in your head says. When someone brings up that they are debt free, or doing well financially does your inner voice say,

“Yah Yah.. I don’t want to hear it.?”

“(sarcastically) Lucky Them!”

Or, “Wow I could really learn from them.”?

The quick judgments in our head explain a lot about how we TRULY feel. Paying attention to those thoughts, and assessing where they come from is what being honest is about.

One reason we become jealous or brush off hearing about others financial successes is because we compare. Whenever we compare, one person always comes out the loser. Stop putting yourself in a losing battle. Change your focus from comparing to learning.

One way to start to change your perspective is to pay attention to the impulsive thoughts you have about money. Try to think about budgeting. What are the first thoughts that come to mind?

This is easier said than done, but the first action you can take is to become more aware of your inner critic. You can’t move forward until you do.

How to be Honest

If you are going to become debt free, you are going to have to be honest. There are people out there that are doing a LOT better with their money than you are. But there are a lot of people that are a lot worst off?and don’t have money to eat.

Being honest is accepting where you are now, exactly as it is.

Accept that you have been misinformed about money and made mistakes.

Accept that you will not be 100% perfect with your money all the time. (and that’s ok!)

Accept that you really wish it was a lot easier, and you had more money.

Accept that you can make the decision today to make progress.

Accept that YOU are the only person that can get you out of this mess.

Accept that YOU are the hero of your own story, and you can succeed.

Accept that you may be jealous or envious of others from time to time.

Accept that in order to move past that jealousy or envy you have to be honest with yourself.

Do you accept?

If these are true for you but you cannot accept them, you may want to find a financial coach or even a friend that can help you with your money beliefs.

If you can accept these in your gut, you can move forward.

Be honest with yourself and become the hero of your own story.

Leave a comment with your thoughts or anything to add, I would love to hear them!

  • Thanks Jackie! The day I realized I could be more aware of my thoughts was a big one. I thought they ruled me.. but now I know that I rule them.

I’ve been loving your posts lately, just to let you know 🙂 We have similar thoughts on many things!

  • The avoidance of debt is a critical aspect of long term financial success. This is particularly true of consumer debt. This was a part of the national philosophical fabric in the United States from its founding. It was an essential part of Puritan thinking which was the basis for American business thinking for three centuries (until the past 30 years when that prudence began to erode).

You are doing a wonderful service by teaching others the importance of keeping debt to a minimum, using it only when necessary and only when it can be paid down by available income, and by having a goal to be debt free. Most people cannot purchase a home without debt at the beginning – but like past generations today’s buyers can work hard to pay off even that debt.

    • Thank you so much for the kind words. I think the only way to make a change is to educate! I never knew all of this before I started learning about it. Now I know SO much, and can’t imagine repeating my past mistakes. 🙂 Let’s hope we can help others do the same.

  • everyone would love to be debt free and have some financial freedom then become rich .*`

  • I’m doing a thing of the same interest and will also be having be aware about this .Thanks a lot.
